Men's Ride

One afternoon, I was performing outdoors with Shuen-Wen Tung. During our coffee break, he suddenly said to me, “Let’s make an album with only sax and bass. What do you think?” I agreed right away because I have always loved challenges! It was not long before we started to meet up to exchange experiences in composing and producing. We arranged rhythm and note very carefully, until it was time to go into the recording studio…

In the beginning of the recording seesion, nothing felt right and it was very restricting. I thought to myself, “But we are so familiar with all these songs! What’s the problem?” After the first recording, I thought about this over and over again. Finally, I realized that the true meaning of this album is in the honest presentation of spontaneity, and not something extravagant but untrue. After the epiphany, we decided to present it in the most direct way. Our so-called “direct presentation” means not using a great amount of editing. Even during the mixing process, we did not adjust the volume of our original performance, which makes this album very true to life. Many music-lovers who invest in million-dollar stereo especially enjoy the ability to distinguish the breathing sound of musicians and the sound of strings among the sounds of various instruments. However, with this album, all you need is a pair of small speakers to hear everything clearly. Although there are only two musical instruments, we succeed in giving you the amazing feeling of extreme fullness. Last but not least, thank you for buying this album, and we hope that you can enjoy it to the very last detail!

It’s not the first saxophone-bass duet album in the world. As early as 1992, saxophone player Steve Coleman and bass master Dave Holland launched an album named “PHASE – SPACE. All nine songs in the album are performed with just two of them. However, they did not sound monotonous at all, but the listener can hear even more clearly the breathing and aria between these two musical instruments that have a difference of two octaves. Every time I listen to it, I find new details and surprises. Because I liked the album too much, I could not help but follow the masters’ steps and form a duet of saxophone and bass. That is when I realized that, without the steady pause provided by the drummer as the groove, and nor the pianist’s flowery chords to envelope my melody, I am just naked and float above the bass. Any flaw in sound, pitch or tempo has nowhere to hide. Luckily, I had Mr. Lu to practice and to compose with me, to help me slowly learn through doing, which then led to the birth of this album. Although it has not the same style and artistic conception as the works of the great masters of other countries, every second of music contains our utmost sincerity. I will keep on learning and improving in the hope of bringing even more different sounds and imaginations to the audience!
